International School of Bern

About

The International School of Berne (ISBerne) provides a high-quality academic programme which encourages students to be reflective and involved in the learning process. This starts in the Early Learning Centre and progresses through to Grade 12. Dedication to excellence in international education has been part of the school drive to develop as an International Baccalaureate World School. The school’s IB Diploma programme was established in 1995; the school was authorised to offer the IB Primary Years Programme in January 2007 and the IB Middle Years Programme in April 2007.It is one of only 9 IB schools in Switzerland offering three IB programmes. ISBerne continues to offer, in addition to the IB, an accredited US High School Diploma. Through our IB programmes, ISBerne students are well-prepared for the future and develop an understanding of cultural diversity, collaboration and independent learning. With over 325 students from over 40 countries and staff from 12 nations, it is truly an international community.

The Program

Pre-school

The Early Learning Centre is the first stage– and an integral component of the IB PYP at ISBerne. In the ELC we aim to create a safe, secure and highly motivating learning environment that is both warm and inviting. Through a variety of learning experiences, both structured and spontaneous, children are provided with the opportunity to develop a positive attitude, to solve problems, to make decisions, to develop confidence, independence and self-esteem. The Early Years programme aims to develop the whole child. The learning experiences provided in the ELC are designed to promote the use of language, early concepts of numbers, and fine and gross motor skills. Play features strongly in the programme. Gentle guidance in play encourages children to explore, ask questions, invent, construct and solve problems. These guided activities enhance the children’s love of learning and stimulate their natural curiosity and desire to explore.

Primary School

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), for students aged 3-11, focuses on the development of the whole child, addressing social, physical, and emotional needs while providing an active learning environment for the developing young mind. The multicultural environment at ISBerne empowers children to be proud of their own culture while being fascinated by those of their peers. It makes the development of an international perspective almost effortless! The rich curricular programme gives children a strong foundation in all the major areas of knowledge: mathematics, social studies, drama, languages, music, visual arts, science, personal and social education, and physical education.

Middle School

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is offered to our students in Grades 6 – 10. The overall framework provides students with a holistic learning experience through a balanced curriculum and academic challenge. It fosters student autonomy, voice and choice while developing conceptual understandings and the connection between learning in the classroom and the real world through authentic contexts for learning.

The MYP encourages students to be curious and empowers them to be critical, creative and reflective thinkers who are empathetic, caring and open-minded, ready to take on the global challenges of tomorrow. We want our students to have a positive attitude towards learning and have strong communication skills.

MYP students at ISBerne learn through inquiry, action and reflection across subject groups that are connected through key concepts and global contexts. They develop learning skills that empower them to manage their learning, meet the objectives of the different subjects, and build a strong foundation for the IB DP.

High School

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a rigorous, internationally recognised Diploma, which is accepted at universities world-wide. In addition to the IB Diploma, ISBerne offers an accredited U.S. High School Diploma. Graduates of the IBDP receive both diplomas, however, students may opt to study for the ISBerne Diploma only which gives access to U.S. Universities.

ISBerne offers a fully accredited U.S. High School Diploma as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The U.S. High School diploma qualifies graduates for U.S. Universities as well as some European higher education schools. Less rigorous than the IB diploma, it is a welcome alternative for many of our students, particularly those planning to study in the U.S.A. ISBerne is also an exam center for both the SAT and PSAT, so students planning to apply to universities in the U.S.A. may fulfil this application requirement at ISBerne.
